Safety on the Bridge

The Bridge has been designed to a high standard of safety and permanent monitoring is maintained.

Round the clock, seven days a week, all the year round - our personnel is at your service. Of course, safety is a collective matter: your own commitment is required. Please read carefully the following sections, which contain useful information for your trip along the Rion Antirion Bridge.

We wish you a safe and pleasant journey.

Never forget that you share the bridge with all other customers and with the people working on it: please care for your neighbors and enjoy your trip. Thanks once again for your confidence in the Rion Antirion Bridge!

Driving, Speed Limits and Belts

The normal speed limit along the Rion Antirion Bridge is 80 km/h. Lower limits apply at the toll plaza area and also, temporarily, in cases of road-works, other special events or incidents. Please pay due attention to the electronic variable-message signs, to the permanent and temporary road signing, to the instructions of the Police and the indications of our personnel.
Please also keep clear of the emergency strip on the right-hand side of the road. This is to be occupied only in case of accident or other emergency. For your safety, parking and stopping along the Bridge (outside the specially-signed parking areas near the toll plaza) are prohibited.
We recommend that you keep safe distances from leading vehicles, especially on the downward sections and on the approach to the toll plaza. For your safety, always wear seatbelts and make sure that children are appropriately buckled-up at the rear seats.

Bikes and helmets

Motorbike riders please keep in mind that the Bridge is used by a wide range of vehicles – light and heavy traffic, traveling at different speeds. It is very important that you comply with all traffic regulations (temporary signing included) for a safe and nice ride.
Never forget to wear a helmet of the appropriate type while riding on a motorbike – whether you are a driver or a passenger.
It is also necessary to make sure your motorbike is visible at all times – day and night. Before your departure, please check that your motorbike’s lights are in good working order.
Please keep in mind that motorbikes can be sensitive to wind and to the ‘draft’ caused by overtaking vehicles, especially heavy ones.

Bicycles

Bicycles are welcome on the Bridge. However, bicycle riders should take special care, since the Bridge is used by a wide range of vehicles – light and heavy traffic, traveling at different speeds. You should be especially careful along the upward section.
There is no toll fare for bicycles. Please ask our employees for assistance when you are about to cross the toll plaza.
For your own safety, please wear an appropriate-type helmet and make sure your bike is visible at all times – day and night.
Bicycles can be especially sensitive to winds and to the ‘draft’ caused by overtaking vehicles, especially heavy ones. Please take extra care.
For your safety, do not drive your bicycle on the pedestrian sidewalk – unless you need to push it, in which case you must use the sidewalk.

Walking

What a nice way to cross the strait and enjoy the view!
There are protected pedestrian sidewalks on both the West and East side of the Bridge. These can be accessed through staircases on both the Rion and the Antirion coast or from parking areas near the toll plaza.
For your safety, it is not allowed to cross the Bridge or the toll plaza area on foot, nor to walk along traffic areas. When at the toll plaza area please use the overhead footbridge. In case of accessibility difficulty, please ask our personnel for assistance.
Hitch-hiking, like any other form of vehicle parking or stopping, is prohibited along the Bridge. If in any difficulty while walking please use the emergency phones in the areas of the pylons (every 560m) in order to contact our personnel for assistance.
Please, make sure that children do not climb on parapets, safety guardrail or cables anchorage: they may fall and harm themselves.

High Winds and Bad Weather

The Rion-Antirion Strait is a particular area as regards meteorological conditions. Especially in the autumn and winter, it is not uncommon to have strong winds, even on days when the nearby towns of Patras and Nafpaktos may seem relatively unaffected!
Driving behavior should always be adjusted to the prevailing weather conditions. Please lower your speeds and avoid unnecessary lane-changing, braking or acceleration during adverse weather. Keep a safe distance with the leading vehicle.
Please pay due attention to the warnings on the variable-message signs, as well as to the instructions of the Police.
In cases of wind speed exceeding 80 km/h, the Police may enforce restrictions to certain sensitive vehicles – such as motorbikes and high-sided, empty trucks

Vehicle Assistance

Our patrol units are available 24 hours a day, every day. In case your vehicle cannot move, a recovery unit will transfer it at a safe place outside the Bridge, free of charge.
If you want to notify us about a vehicle breakdown or accident, please call 26340.39010 or -011. If you are near a pylon you can also use the orange-coloured emergency phone.
Stop your car on the emergency strip, turn on your alarm lights and place the safety triangle behind your vehicle until our patrol car arrives.
For your own safety it is preferable, if you can, to get on the pedestrian sidewalk. If this is not possible, please be cautious of the traffic and avoid getting in the way of vehicles.

European Road Safety Charter

Athens, February 20th, 2008: GEFYRA S.A. signs the European Road Safety Charter

The European Road Safety Charter is much more than a policy document. It is an invitation by the European Commission to take concrete actions, assess results and further heighten awareness about the need to reduce road accident fatalities.

The European Commission is playing a major role in the European-wide effort to make our roads safer. It wishes to afford all stakeholders (institutions, associations and companies) the opportunity to share ideas and practices across Europe, so that all stakeholders can learn from each other and gain inspiration as to how the road situation in Europe can be improved.

In return the European Road Safety Charter offers European recognition to the associations that have signed up, and also makes the road safety actions they wish to carry out more visible on a European level.

Upon the signature of its Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Christophe Pélissié du Rausas is committed to cooperate with the Greek Road Safety Institute “Panos Mylonas” for a three years’ period to,

  • inform students and local communities about road safety issues through conferences,
  • distribute through its toll stations all the road safety leaflets that the Ministry of Transports will provide,
  • organize seminars for its personnel every trimester,
  • publish road safety articles in its internal communication documents,
  • multiply awareness electronic messages on its variable messages’ signs
